27 things only a camp counselor will understand

summercampcookout:

My roommate put this on my wall. She knew I’d understand. I’m sure you’ll understand too.

i was talking to another counselor last night, bemoaning that i was trying to find a job in ottawa instead of going back to our camp on the east coast. to cheer me up, she started to recite her favourite camp memory:

Sage: “Did I ever tell you about that one time I was in a tent with Boomer and Shine and Cherry, but Cherry wasn’t there…”

Me: “ahahahahahahah.”

Sage: “And we had just woken up and hey! You’re already laughing. This is great.”

Me: “Sagey, you’ve told me this story five hundred times. Boomer’s told me this story. Shine’s told me this story. Even Cherry’s told me this story, and we were never at camp at the same time.”

Me: “Keep telling me anyway. I’m already laughing.”

Sage: “And Boomer said, ‘Hey, did you hear thunder?’”

Sage: “And I said, ‘Yeah, I had a sunburn once, on my shoul- wait, what?’”

"Breathe. You’re going to be okay. Breathe and remember that you’ve been in this place before. You’ve been this uncomfortable and anxious and scared, and you’ve survived. Breathe and know that you can survive this too. These feelings can’t break you. They’re painful and debilitating, but you can sit with them and eventually, they will pass. Maybe not immediately, but sometime soon, they are going to fade and when they do, you’ll look back at this moment and laugh for having doubted your resilience. I know it feels unbearable right now, but keep breathing, again and again. This will pass. I promise it will pass."

"Before you begin to write a sentence, imagine the scene you want to paint with your words. Imagine that you are the character and feel what the character feels. Smell what the character smells, and hear with that character’s ears. For an instant, before you begin to write, see and feel what you want the reader to see and feel."

Your mouth
could do
brutal
things
to my
heart
but you’re a
risk
I’m willing to
fuck
because I have a feeling
your hands
would do
beautiful
things
to my
thighs.
